Ricky Rollins
Safety Is About More Than Protecting Yourself. It Is About Protecting Your Coworkers, Your Friends, And Your Family From A Life Without You.
Motivational safety speaker Ricky Rollins can reach hearts and inspire changes in behavior to save lives by sharing stories of events that affected him, friends, family and co-workers.
He sustained a severe head trauma that nearly killed him in a workplace accident. He teaches that every action people make has consequences that we may not want to live with.
Ricky didn’t evaluate a hazard in 1995 in his haste to finish a job and move to the next one. A large piece of slag fell and struck his head.
Ricky cares about workplace safety and speaks from the heart, which rarely leaves a dry eye in the room. He is a masterful storyteller who interacts with his audience and gets them to participate. They may laugh and may cry but get people to understand how vital it is to be able to go home every day without injuries.
The Day We Will Remember
On December 30, 1995 Ricky was working in the Electric Arc Furnace combustion chamber when a piece of slag fell out and struck Ricky in the head. It caused a complete skull fracture, with a section of his skull depressed against his brain.
Ricky tells the story of the accident and how he came to realize the impact on his family the accident had. What changed Ricky’s life was realizing the potential impact it would have had if he hadn’t survived.
But not being killed was not the luckiest thing that happened that day.
In the manlift basket beside him was another man that trusted Ricky to ensure his safety. That man walking away unhurt was the luckiest thing that ever happened to Ricky.
The Circle
Everyone has a circle of family, friends and coworkers that care about them.
What happens to you affects the people in your circle, and what happens to them comes right back around and affects you. We’re connected to each other, and one unlucky day is all it takes to alter the circles of others for generations to come.
“I just want to say thanks for your presentation this morning. I really felt like I got a lot out of it. It caused me to think seriously about changing some of my behaviors. I have used smokeless tobacco off and on since I was a teenager. I will turn 45 this month and it has been heavy on my mind to kick the habit. I have a wife and 8 children. After hearing you speak, and contemplating all I have to lose, I walked out of the meeting with full intentions of not dipping again. What you said and how you said it was the perfect motivation that I needed. In my mind I have been battling when and how to quit, but your talk helped me decide. It won’t be easy but I’m going to try.”
