Empower is a common word used in our society. Power is in every aspect and corner in our society and community. According to the Merriam-webster dictionary, “power is the possession of control, authority, or influence over others. Power gives the wielder the ability to get things done.” This is why every year aside from the wealthy list Forbes releases every year; it also releases a list of the most powerful people in the world to show just how much control over the world top individuals wield.
The word empowerment is derived from the word power; the difference is a little modification to the definition of power. Again using the Merriam-webster dictionary, “empowerment is the act or action of empowering someone or something: the granting of the power, right, or authority to perform various acts or duties.” In simpler terms, empowerment is granting an individual(s) the power to accomplish a task.
Empowerment enhance the level of self-determination and autonomy in individuals including communities so as to give them the enablement to represent their various interest in a self-determined and responsible manner in their personal authority. Take, for example, teaching or providing the means for to code for a person that wants to be a programmer but does not have the resources to learn programming is empowering that person. Once that person completes the programming lesson, you have given him or her the power to be the best programmer in the world.
The same also happens in the business or organization setting, as employee empowerment seeks to provide employees with the necessary resources and tools to make bold workplace decisions without supervision. Employee empowerment is crucial for organizations as it provides employees with the ability to be more confident and carry out their jobs with less supervision.
