Frequently Asked Questions About Booking Sports Speakers
1. What is a sportsman dinner, exactly?
A sportsman dinner is a ticketed evening event, usually a fundraiser, built around a meal and a featured sports personality. The speaker shares stories from their playing days, takes questions, and mingles with guests. Community groups, minor sports associations, service clubs, and charities across Canada use the format because it’s simple to run and easy to sell: people who might never attend a gala will buy a ticket to hear a hockey legend tell stories.
2. Which athletes work best as sportsman dinner speakers?
The best fit is an athlete your local crowd grew up watching, which often matters more than career statistics. Former NHL, NFL, NBA, and MLB players, CFL stars, Olympians, and curlers all draw well in different regions. Beyond the name, look for someone who’s a natural storyteller and comfortable in a loose, social room. An athlete who can be funny about their own career usually outperforms a bigger name who delivers a stiff, rehearsed talk.
3. What makes a sportsman dinner effective as a fundraiser?
The speaker sells the tickets, but the margin usually comes from everything around them: live and silent auctions, raffle tables, signed memorabilia, and sponsored tables for local businesses. A good speaker supports this by staying visible through the evening and, in many cases, signing items that go straight to the auction block. When you plan the budget, treat the speaker fee as the draw that makes the rest of the revenue possible.
4. Do we need a household name to sell tickets?
Not always. In smaller markets, a former player with strong regional ties can fill a room at a fraction of the fee a national star commands. What matters is the match between the name and your audience: a beloved Roughrider will outsell a bigger international name in Saskatchewan. If ticket sales worry you, a booking advisor can tell you honestly which names have been drawing well in your region lately.
5. What does the speaker do beyond the keynote?
Most sportsman dinner speakers do far more than the talk itself. A typical evening includes a meet-and-greet or photo session, autographs, a Q&A segment, and often a head-table appearance during dinner. Some will help auction off signed items or join a hot-stove style panel. Confirm these pieces during contracting rather than assuming them, since each speaker handles appearances, signing limits, and timing a little differently.
6. How should we structure the evening around the speaker?
Keep the program tight. A common flow runs reception and silent auction, dinner, live auction, then the speaker as the closing highlight, with a Q&A to finish. Put the speech after the fundraising asks, because the room’s energy peaks during the talk and people tend to leave once it ends. Plan for 30 to 45 minutes of speaking plus questions, and protect that slot from running late.
