Influence is one of the most straightforward words to explain. According to the definition on vocabulary.com, “Influence is the power to have an important effect on someone or something. If someone influences someone else, they are changing a person or thing in an indirect but important way.” Many things influence peoples’ lives; it could be intentional or unintentional.
Take, for instance, in a house that has a doctor as the father of the house, the firstborn son in the home would most likely look up to his father and model himself on him. Down the line, this might influence the son to model his life on his father, and he might his ambition might be to be a doctor in future. This is what is referred to as unintentional influence as the father’s lifestyle might have influenced the life of his son, even without his knowledge. In the world we live in, we unknowingly, through our actions or words, influence others just as they influence us, unknowingly as well. Bad influence yields bad results and vice versa; thus, the more good influence we surround ourselves with, the happier we will be.
The other type of influence is that which is very common, and it is called the direct or intentional influence. This is where a person aims to alter the course of a person’s decision or event. Take, for instance, in an organization; a manager can use his experience to influence the motivation levels of the employees under him so they can perform better. Another example is shown in the use of influencers who help bring a certain audience to a particular product.
Influence speakers are individuals who are knowledgeable influencers; they know how it works, how it can be best utilized in a diverse social context, and how the negative aspect can be controlled. These individuals also give lectures on the different types of influence, and how one can achieve his or her goals by using the power of influence.
