David Granirer is a keynote speaker on mental health, a counselor, and a well-known stand-up comedian. He himself is also suffering from depression, has found a way to cope with this through comedy. In 2004, He established his award-winning teaching program Stand Up For Mental Health to teach stand-up comedy to cancer survivors, recuperating addicts, and people with mental health issues.
In collaboration with many mental health organizations, several Stand Up For Mental Health groups have been trained by him in more than fifty cities of the USA, Australia, and Canada. He with his comic team have been invited to perform in more than 500 shows conducted by the government departments, the military, universities, mental health organizations, corporations, and correctional facilities. He has won an Award of Excellence from National Council for Behavioral Health for his incredible work to disregard the taboo associated with mental ailment. Besides global media, David’s work also has been featured in the award-winning Australian documentary Crack-Up and the VOICE Award-winning Passionate Eye documentary Cracking Up. Depression hit him during his teenage. He tried to kill himself by overdosing on pills due to too much dependence on drugs and after effecting by the downward spiral of alcoholism. He ended up in the psych ward for six weeks. David shares his ordeal that after his release, he was so ashamed to be wicked and flawed.
Because unluckily there was a lack of awareness about mental health issues. No one was able to explain to him what he was going through. People didn’t even talk about it and suffered in silence. He said you just helplessly knew that it is something terrible and unbearable. He recalled that he was going around aimlessly and believing he is nothing and he is no one. He completely changed from being an extrovert to an introvert. He started avoiding people, even while wandering alone if he happens to come across some acquaintance, he ran around to hide from them. He still has to sustain a periodical attack of depression, even after taking one year of therapy and medication.
David considers that people have started talking about their mental illnesses through comedy. This is making a huge difference. It would soothe him to have such strong and funny people around who bring their illnesses out of closets, on the other hand, helping him to recover from shame. They also kindle hope that recovery is possible.
On Stand Up For Mental Health, hundreds of media stories have been published all over the English-speaking world. The coverage of the initiative has received a tremendously positive response, so helping to obliterate the stigma associated with mental illnesses and make it acceptable to society.
