Theo Fleury
Stanley Cup Champion, Olympic Gold Medalist, Mental Health Advocate, Best Selling Author
Theo Fleury is an NHL hockey champion but he will tell you his most important work happened off the ice.
Theo is a survivor and a leading voice in relational trauma. He is also a charismatic keynote speaker and facilitator who inspires others to leadership, teamwork, and resilience.
Theo came from a troubled childhood with abuse and coping happening through self-destructive behaviours. He made a big decision in 2003 to walk away from hockey, which was the only life he knew.
His story was published and Playing with Fire became a bestseller. He also published a second book Conversations with Rattlesnake, which he wrote with occupational therapist and neurobiologist Kim Barthel. That book helps people gain insight into how our brains work and explores the science of why humans act as they do.
Sharing his experiences allows Theo to provide hope and courage to those struggling. He is an inspirational healthy advocate for change. He is compassionate and creates a safe environment for others to share without blame or judgment. He focuses on leading others to healing.
Theo is available for both in-person and virtual presentations.
“Me Too.” (Theo’s Story)

From the greatest heights to the lowest depths, both professionally and personally, Theo shares a message about winning it all, losing it all, and reinventing himself all over again.
“Me Too” is an uplifting talk about hope. It is a reminder that we are never alone in our struggles, because we have all faced adversity in our lives.

The world is always changing. Theo embraces continual self-reinvention and teaches workshop participants that impactful leadership requires the willingness to welcome change into our everyday environments.
Helping other people in need is also a powerful leadership skill that many group settings can benefit from. “Theo was truly amazing! When he spoke (without any notes!) he had the room’s full attention. I stood at the back of the room and watched. I was amazed that no one left early or checked their phones. I know there were a few people in the room that Theo connected with on a very deep & personal level and was proud to think that inviting Theo to speak at our event might have helped them move forward in some way.”
St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation
“His raw honesty moved the audience members and touched each of us still to this day. It gave such a feeling of hope as the youth were held totally engaged by what he shared… a wonderful being – a truly strong soul – he is a survivor!”
CMHA Parkland
“The words hero, inspirational, real, and compassionate come to mind when thinking of Theo. He was more than just a guest speaker to us. He was a therapist, motivator, and an inspiration to all of us. All of his hockey accolades and accomplishments are great, but what he is doing now, making people feel like they belong like they have self-worth and something to fight for, that their life really matters, that is the true accomplishment.”
River East Transcona Educational Assistants Association
“Nobody got up and left, everybody stayed to the end and he got a standing ovation at the end of his talk. He’s everybody’s hero on and off the ice.”
Akisqnuk First Nation Community Wellness Facilitator
