Olympian speed skater Cindy Klassen knows how to help people deal with all the emotions that come with both success and heartbreak.
The six-time Olympic medalist became the first Canadian to win five medals at a single Winter Olympics in 2006. Her wins were gold in the 1500 m, silver in the 1000m, silver in the team pursuit, bronze in the 5000m, and bronze in the 3000m. This was an outstanding followup to her bronze medal she won in 2002, making her the most decorated Canadian Olympic athlete in history.
Her road wasn’t paved with gold. She missed making the Olympic team in 1998 and overcame the odds to qualify in 2002 for Team Canada. She was the first Canadian in 27 years to win the overall 2003 World Allround Speed Skating Championships and finished second that year at the World Spring Championships. This was the first time in 15 years that a skater came out of both events with overall medals the same year. She also won the 1500m World Cup Title that year.
Retirement from speed skating gave Cindy the push to give back. She is currently a Calgary police officer. Through both careers, Cindy has found the mindset and tools that moved her through all the injuries, setbacks, personal tragedy and achievements that makes her what she is now. She understands how they led her to the Olympic podium and allowed her to transition to life off the ice as a police officer. She wants to help others to dream big, stay positive, and enjoy the journey of life.
